The most common psychometric tool for measuring an individual’s empathy is the IRI ( Davis, 1980). Saklofske, in Psychometrics and Psychological Assessment, 2017 Measures of empathy Criterion/PredictiveĬriterion/predictive validity coefficients remain to be documented.Ĭarina Coulacoglou, Donald H. (2009) then conducted a further exploratory factor analysis on the intercorrelations of the final 16 items of the TEQ forcing a single-factor structure. Construct/Factor AnalyticĪn iterative maximum-likelihood factor analysis with SMCs as initial communality estimates was undertaken on the item intercorrelations ( N=200). Males and females did not differ significantly in total TEQ scores in the first sample, although in the second sample, females scored significantly higher than males. In a sample of 200 students, a negative correlation was observed with the Autism Quotient ( r=−.30). Scores on the TEQ correlated with a behavioral measure of social comprehension (Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test-Revised: r=.35, Interpersonal Perception Task-15: r=.23) in a sample of 79 undergraduates ( Spreng et al., 2009). TEQ scores also correlated positively with EQ scores ( r=.80) ( Spreng et al., 2009). TEQ scores correlated positively with IRI Empathic Concern ( r=.74), with Perspective Taking ( r=.29), and Fantasy ( r=.52). Total TEQ scores also correlated positively with IRI Perspective Taking ( r=.35). The TEQ correlated positively with IRI Empathic Concern ( r=.74) and also after reworded Empathic Concern items were removed ( r=.71). Rae Westbury, in Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Constructs, 2015 Validity Convergent/Concurrent Taken together, the IRI subscales measure empathy as various types of both cognitive processes (perspective taking and fantasy subscales) and affective processes (empathic concern and personal distress subscales).ĭavid.
INTERPERSONAL REACTIVITY INDEX MOVIE
The fantasy subscale measures an individual's tendency to imagine himself or herself in fictional situations (e.g., in the scene of a movie or as a character in a book). The personal distress subscale measures an individual's tendency to experience discomfort when in the presence of those in need. The empathic concern subscale measures an individual's tendency to feel sympathy and compassion for those in need. Taking these in turn, the perspective taking subscale measures an individual's tendency to spontaneously adopt other people's points of view. Specifically, the IRI consists of four subscales: perspective taking, empathic concern, personal distress, and fantasy. The structure of the IRI is based on the assumption that empathy consists of four related, but conceptually distinct, constructs.
